You spend a huge chunk of your life at work, so finding an employer with a great workplace culture can make all the difference.

Forbes recently released its second-annual ranking of Canada’s best employers for company culture, and four employers from the Edmonton region earned a spot on the list, with one cracking the top 10.

The media company partnered with market research firm Statista to survey more than 37,000 employees at companies with at least 500 people in Canada.

Survey respondents were asked whether they would recommend their employer to others and rate their workplace on factors such as recognizing good performance, supporting a healthy work-life balance, valuing input from employees across the organization, encouraging collaboration, providing avenues to advance, and fairness, inclusivity, and opportunity.

They were also asked if they would recommend their previous employers from the past two years and companies they knew through industry experience or through friends or family.

Of the 200 employers that made the list, Stantec, ATB Financial, the University of Alberta, and Freson Bros. represented the Edmonton area.

Stantec was the highest-ranked Edmonton-area employer, landing in seventh overall. The engineering, architecture, and environmental consulting firm was founded in 1954 and employs approximately 13,200 people. Stantec has frequently appeared on best employer lists, including Times most recent ranking and Forbes‘ inaugural workplace culture ranking last year, where it placed 64th.

In total, 13 Alberta employers made the ranking. The other nine were based in Calgary:

  • Bethany Care Society (fifth)
  • Shell Canada (37th)
  • Suncor Energy (77th)
  • Enmax (82nd)
  • Bennett Jones (92nd)
  • Mount Royal University (141st)
  • Enbridge (162nd)
  • Rogers Communications (164th)
  • Mark’s (195th)
