Fan throws cooked bird onto Edmonton ice and it may have hurt the Oilers

One Edmonton Oilers fan got a bit too rowdy during the third period of Wednesday night’s playoff game at Rogers Place.

In the moments after Oilers forward Josh Samanski scored an electric game-tying goal to even the score at 4-4, the Oilers had all the momentum in Game 2. Rogers Place was rocking, and it was looking like Edmonton was about to find a way to get another come-from-behind victory. But that momentum was halted after a fan threw something onto the ice.

In all the excitement of the game-tying goal, one fan opted to throw some sort of cooked meat onto the ice during the middle of play. It looked like a rotisserie chicken, or perhaps a cooked duck?

In any case, the carcass slid across the ice and broke into multiple pieces just in front of the Anaheim bench. Play was halted, and the ice crew was called onto the ice to clean up the mess.

Bringing in any sort of cooked meat into Rogers Place is not allowed, meaning that this particular fan must have smuggled it through security. The arena also has a policy that says fans will be asked to leave Rogers Place if they are caught throwing objects.

Daily Hive can confirm that an Oilers fan wearing a white jersey was seen being escorted out of his seat shortly after the incident.

The delay certainly messed with the rhythm of the game. The Oilers were buzzing before this happened, but things definitely shifted after the debris was cleaned up. In essence, this gave the Ducks a free timeout to regroup after losing the lead.

Not too long after the delay, Anaheim forward Cutter Gauthier scored the eventual game-winner for the Ducks.

Oilers fans do have a history of throwing meat on the ice during the playoffs, though it’s usually reserved for before the game and not in the middle of play. In the past two playoff runs, some Edmonton fans have chosen to throw Alberta beef on the ice.

It was a unique way of showing local pride, and was much better received than this.

This should wind up being a lesson to all fans to not mess with momentum when your team has it.
