A hilarious Instagram account is dedicated to pits across Edmonton

If you’ve ever walked past a fenced-off hole in Edmonton and wondered why it still looks exactly the same months — or years – later, you’re not alone.

But now you don’t have to wonder. An Instagram account hilariously documenting the city’s empty lots, stalled developments, demolition sites, and, yes, pits, has arrived.

Since launching in May, @edmontonpittour has built a steady following by combining humour with local history and development sleuthing, using news reports and SkyriseCities to document the city’s various pits.

And like any good niche internet project, the account has even developed its own vocabulary.

According to the account, a “pit” is a place where a building once stood, but no active construction is happening. An “almost pit” is a derelict building awaiting its transformation, while an “almost-not-pit” is a former pit where construction is finally underway. There’s even a category for a “PFKAP,” or “Pal Formerly Known As Pit.”

One of the account’s most notable entries is The Jameson, better known as “the Deep,” located in WĂźhkwĂȘntĂŽwin across from Paul Kane Park. According to Edmonton Pit Tour, the site was first proposed for redevelopment in 2019, received rezoning approval in 2020, with the 17-storey tower originally expected to be completed in 2024.

That timeline later slipped to 2026 before the project was ultimately cancelled in 2025. Today, “the Deep,” as the account puts it, is “just pitting.”

Then there’s the “BMO Pit,” which the account calls “the GOAT”. Located at 102nd Avenue and 101st Street, the site has apparently been a pit since the BMO building, built in 1984, was demolished in 2018. Before that, the historic Tegler Building, built in 1912, occupied the corner.

The account gives it a perfect 10/10 pit rating, helped by the fact that it appeared in the first season of The Last of Us.

The creators have also floated the idea of hosting walking tours of Edmonton’s pits. So if that is something that piques your interest, now you know where to find them.
