The Edmonton Oilers and LA Kings are on a collision course for the first round of the playoffs again, which means a familiar face will be back in the Alberta capital.
Following last season’s run to the Stanley Cup Final, the Oilers decided to let forward Warren Foegele walk into free agency. On the open market, the 28-year-old opted to sign a contract with the rival Kings.
Foegele has already said that his former Oilers teammates teased him about that decision over the summer. However, now that he has nearly a full year in LA under his belt, Foegele is starting to learn a special kind of hatred for his former team.
He revealed some of his thoughts in a recent video posted by the Kings’ social media team.
“I hate them too. I hate the Oilers, too; it’s just part of the gig,” Foegele said when asked about being on a team with such an intense rivalry with his former team.
There is good reason for the Kings to hate the Oilers as the two teams have met in the first-round of the playoffs for three straight seasons, and it appears they are on a collision course for a fourth this year as well. In every instance, the Oilers have found a way to eliminate LA.
Losing to the same team that many times is bound to get frustrating, and you can expect that the rivalry will be peaking if these two teams play each other again. It’s obvious that Foegele was keeping it lighthearted as he smiled and laughed while he said it. But still, there is likely more than a hint of truth to it.
While the season isn’t going quite as well for Oilers forward Viktor Arvidsson, there should be similar feelings for him as he spent the last three seasons with the Kings.
For Foegele, it has been a very good debut season on the West Coast. After setting a career-high in goals, assists, and points with Edmonton last year, it appears that he may be surpassing those totals in LA. Through 72 games, he has 20 goals and 40 points, which is just one off of last season’s totals.
This connection should make any Oilers-Kings playoff series that much more exciting.
