Longtime Edmonton Oilers media personality Tom Gazzola has landed a big new role in Alberta’s capital city.

Gazzola recently announced that he was leaving Edmonton Sports Talk after three years with the outlet.

Plenty of speculation started flying in regards to what this meant for Gazzola’s future in sports media. On Friday morning, we learned what his next path will be.

Gazzola will be joining Sports 1440 as the new morning host, with his first day on the job set to be Monday, July 6. He will replace Kevin Karius, who announced his retirement earlier in the week. Karius, who had been a staple in Edmonton’s sports coverage over the last 35 years, had been hosting the morning show on Sports 1440 since 2023.

“In my eyes, Kevin Karius is a broadcasting legend in Northern Alberta and it’s an honour to be able to get behind the mic in his place,” Gazzola said. “I’m incredibly excited to work again with [Jason] Gregor and all the great teammates at Sports 1440 and help continue to build a fantastic foundation.

“I can’t wait to get started.”

Sports 1440 is still a relatively new network in Edmonton, having hit the airwaves for the first time in September 2023. It came shortly after TSN 1260 pulled the plug following a larger series of cuts in June 2023. The station features several big names in the Edmonton media market, including Jason Gregor and Allan Mitchell, better known as “Lowetide”.

Gazzola has been a prominent figure in the Edmonton sports scene for some time. Part of that comes directly from his work with the Oilers, as he served as a team reporter and host from 2010 until 2018.

“We needed an experienced host similar to Kevin, with deep connections to the community and the Oilers, Elks, Riverhawks, Stingers, and Oil Kings, and Tom was our first choice,” Gregor said. “He brings a wealth of experience, great energy and is a great teammate. I look forward to working together again.”
