Longtime Oilers reporter leaves job at Edmonton Sports Talk

The Edmonton sports media landscape got a bit of a shakeup on Thursday morning.

With the NHL offseason underway for the Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton Elks officially getting their CFL season started, a longtime local sports broadcaster is changing jobs.

Daily Hive has confirmed that Tom Gazzola has officially left Edmonton Sports Talk (EST) and will be pursuing another unknown opportunity. Gazzola had been a significant member of the local sports station ever since its inception in 2023.

He was a part of the station’s founding team alongside fellow broadcasters Dustin Nielson, Lieutenant Eric, and Matt Iwanyk.

Gazzola took to social media on Thursday morning to share the news and give some thoughts about his resignation.

“I wanna take this opportunity to say thank you to everybody,” Gazzola said. “This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, and so I just wanted to let everybody know, all the people that watched and listened over the last three years, I appreciate you very much.

“To my EST teammates, some of the best people I’ve ever worked with… You’ll see me on the sidelines on CFL on TSN, can’t wait to get that going.”

Gazzola has been a staple in the Edmonton sports media scene for the past 18 years. He initially got his start with theScore in 2008 as a producer before a brief stint with CTV Edmonton in 2010.

He was hired by the Oilers as a team reporter and host in 2010 and stayed in that position for eight years, leaving the organization in 2018. He then shifted into a sports reporter role with TSN, where he hosted the now-defunct TSN 1260 Oilers pre- and post-game shows, while also adding CFL sideline reporting to his repertoire.

Throughout his career, Gazzola has amassed quite a following among Edmonton sports fans, with over 24,000 followers on X.

There is no word on where Gazzola’s next gig will be or if he will continue on in the Edmonton sports media landscape. From all accounts, this was a decision that was made by Gazzola, and it doesn’t appear to be a layoff of any type.

He mentioned that he will continue his CFL sideline reporting on TSN and has some preliminary stuff in the works for the 2026-27 NHL season with his former EST show host, Shawn Belle.

This is just the latest media shakeup in Edmonton. Last season, highly respected Oilers beat writer Daniel Nugent-Bowman abruptly left The Athletic after eight years with the publication without any explanation.
