Leon Draisaitl isn’t the only Edmonton Oilers player getting married this weekend.
Kasperi Kapanen, who joined the Oilers in mid-November after being claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Blues, married his long-time girlfriend Matleena Laakso on Friday. Laakso, like Kapanen, is from Finland.

The newlyweds didn’t take long at all to plan out a wedding, as they only got engaged this past Christmas, which Laakso also announced on Instagram.

Unfortunately, many Oilers teammates were unable to make the wedding, as they are currently in the South of France celebrating Draisaitl’s wedding with Canadian actress Celeste Desjardins. Despite being busy with maid of honour duties, however, Lauren Kyle McDavid still took the time to congratulate the happy couple.
“Congratulations!!” she wrote on Laakso’s post. “So beautiful.”
Kapanen, 29, wound up suiting up for 57 games with the Oilers this past season, scoring five goals and 13 points. He was healthy scratched throughout the entire first round of the playoffs, but made an immediate impact when inserted versus the Vegas Golden Knights, scoring the overtime goal to help the Oilers advance to the Western Conference Final.
Thanks to his great showing in the playoffs, the Oilers rewarded Kapanen with a one-year, $1.3 million extension. He’s expected to continue working in a bottom-six role, which will have even more importance this coming season given the departures of players such as Connor Brown and Corey Perry.
