Hyman reveals injury specifics and when he’ll be back for Edmonton Oilers

It’s been a pretty emotional week for Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman.

The 32-year-old was as hungry as ever to get back to the Stanley Cup Final after he and his Oilers teammates fell just shy of winning it all one year ago. He was putting together a very good run with five goals and 11 points through 15 games, along with a ridiculous playoff-leading 111 hits. Unfortunately, his solid run came to an end last week.

In Game 4 of the Western Conference Final versus the Dallas Stars, Hyman had an awkward collision with Mason Marchment just outside of the Oilers’ zone. It was immediately clear that he was in a world of hurt, as he immediately headed to the bench and went straight down the tunnel.

The next morning, head coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters that he was likely out for the remainder of the playoffs, though he didn’t comment on what the exact injury was. On Wednesday, ahead of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, Hyman himself revealed the injury and didn’t fully commit to being ready for the start of training camp next season.

“The wrist was dislocated,” Hyman said. “A lot goes into that. Ligaments, breaks, whatever else, don’t want to get into the nitty gritty. I should be back for the start of next year, but I don’t want to put a timetable on it. There will be rehab involved.”

Hyman has already opened up about the disappointment of not being able to compete with his team in the Cup Final, but mentioned again today how difficult it was to process in the immediate aftermath of suffering the injury.

“I think I was still a little delusional that I could play through it until after the surgery,” Hyman said. “Emotional in the moment, I don’t think you fully grasp it until a little later and then you can kind of get your head around it. Some things in life you can’t control, and this is one of them.”

Though the Oilers will be without Hyman going forward, they were able to welcome back a big addition in Mattias Ekholm for the final game of the Western Conference Final. They will also have a healthy Evander Kane this time around, as the 33-year-old was forced to miss the majority of last year’s Cup Final due to injury.
