A west Edmonton community is getting a new hub with an NHL-sized rink

A west Edmonton neighbourhood is getting a new community hub with an NHL-sized outdoor skating rink, seasonal sports courts, accessible washrooms, and flexible indoor spaces.
The Glastonbury Community League is behind the project, building off existing amenities like the Glastonbury Spray Park and playground, located beside the new rink.
According to the community’s website, the new spaces will be designed for multiple uses to maximize use of the new amenities.
The warming shack will double as a cooling space in the summer, while the boarded rink will become a space for basketball, pickleball, and other events during the warmer months. An auxiliary building would host small community events and meeting spaces.

The most recent construction timeline, posted on June 22, shows that a construction contract for the rink had been signed, with construction set to begin in July.

If everything goes to plan, the new outdoor rink will be completed by November, just in time for skating season.
A timeline for the rest of the community hub is still up in the air depending on fundraising. Once targets are met, the community expects the construction permit application, project tendering, contract agreements, and mobilization to take about four months.
Construction of the new hub would then take approximately one year.
