Edmonton's GearHalo is now manufacturing face masks

An Edmonton-based company that manufactures deodorizers for sports and exercise equipment has repurposed its materials and facility to make face masks amid the pandemic.

Gear Halo began repurposing their equipment in mid-March.

“The decision was made late March as schools had been closed and sporting activities stopped,” said Demetrius Bazos of Gear Halo in a statement to Daily Hive.

“Our normal production was no longer required so we decided to move in a direction that would help in this COVID crisis.”

The company went back to the drawing board to see how they could utilize materials they had on hand.

“We normally produce a deodorizer pod and the fabric we use is very technical,” said Bazos. “We realized its features actually make a very good face mask.”

The company then modified their sewing machines and fabric-cutting machines for the new face mask design and outsourced elastic ear straps.

“The masks feature a technical sport fabric that has water resistance on the exterior shell to reduce the penetration of droplets and spray, the interior has an antibacterial treatment and is moisture wicking,” said Bazos.

“Currently the first production of masks has been donated to extended care facilities and some essential services such as food bank volunteers.”

For every two masks purchased, the company is donating one to first responders and essential service workers.

“The world is changing and masks are becoming a way of life. Unfortunately it’s not that easy to find a quality one,” said Bazos.

“In this unprecedented time of crisis, it’s about businesses looking inward and finding a way to help. We want to keep our factory open and be part of the solution.”
