After a blissful stretch of warm weather, it’s time to dig out your heavy winter jackets because the temperature in Edmonton is forecast to take a serious dive soon.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) recently spoke to Daily Hive, telling Albertans to prepare for a drastic change in the weather, and looking at the most recent seven-day forecast for Edmonton, it’s going to be chilly.

Edmonton is forecast to reach a mainly sunny high of 7°C today, with an overnight low of -3°C. Temperatures continue to dip as we roll through the weekend, with Friday seeing a high of 4°C, Saturday 2°C, and finally on Sunday the daytime high fails to break above zero.

It’s been a minute since Edmonton failed to see a daytime high above zero, with all that warm weather we saw earlier this month.

The colder temperatures really ramp up as we start next week, with Monday, Feb. 16, showing a high of -6°C and a low of -16°C, with periods of snow starting up at night.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, Edmonton is forecast to reach a high of -13°C, with a numbing -24°C overnight. Wednesday, Feb. 18, isn’t looking any better, with a high of just -16°C. Snow is also expected throughout those two days, so make sure your snow shovel is ready.

When you do the math between today’s daytime high and the low on Tuesday, it’s a temperature change of 31 degrees. It’s time to get your furnace working a little harder next week!

If you were curious about how our averages for this time of year shake out for YEG, according to ECCC, the average high for Edmonton around this time of year is -4°C, while the average low is -13°C.

If you aren’t a fan of the colder temperatures, you probably should start looking at booking a tropical vacation if you can.

ECCC meteorologist Justin Shelley recently told Daily Hive that current indications are showing that the colder pattern will likely stay through the end of February and possibly extend into early March; however, they cautioned that confidence lowers the farther out in time you go.
