Businesses always come and go, but some in Edmonton leave a massive impression on the city, and we wish they were still around.

Here are six YEG businesses that closed for good in 2024 that we miss dearly.

Glass Bookshop

Glass Bookshop in Edmonton announces it

Glass Bookshop, one of Edmonton’s most popular independent bookstores, announced it would permanently close in early February 2024. Founded in 2018, Glass Bookshop promoted independent and Canadian writing, with a special focus on 2SLGBTQ+ and racialized authors. It was a pillar of the Ritchie community and it is sorely missed!

After four years, the Edmonton Downtown Farmers’ Market held its final market inside the historic GWG building on January 28, 2024. While we certainly miss this adorable indoor market, it returned to 104th Street on weekends last summer as a vibrant outdoor farmers’ market.

Northern Chicken

This one broke our hearts. After seven-and-a-half years, Northern Chicken’s location on 104th Street closed on February 15, 2024. The closure announcement came just weeks after the popular soul-food spot shut the doors to its other location on 124th Street. We miss those chicken sandwiches and outstanding vibes!

Mandolin Books

Mandolin Books and Coffee Company opened in 2003 and was a treasured gathering place for Edmonton bibliophiles and coffee lovers for over twenty years. We miss the warm, inviting, and cozy atmosphere that made it the perfect place to read and relax over a steaming cup of locally roasted coffee. Mandolin Books closed permanently in September 2024.

Chicken For Lunch, one of Edmonton’s most popular lunchtime spots, officially closed its doors after 32 years on February 29, 2024. The spot, which had been open since 1992, was a lunchtime staple in Downtown Edmonton and was known for its dry spicy chicken, as well as its owner, Amy Quon. Luckily for those with fond memories of Chicken For Lunch and Quon, she can still be found at The Lingnan, another restaurant owned by her family, serving up her special chicken.

Earth’s General Store, a popular Edmonton organic grocery store that had been in business for 33 years, closed its doors on September 22, 2024. For decades, it was a go-to spot for organic and fair trade goods on Whyte Avenue.

“Like many small businesses right now, EGS has been facing financial challenges which have led to an impossible situation. Despite our commitment and efforts, our solutions have not been enough to sustainably move forward,” it said in an Instagram post.
