Bridge construction project over Yellowhead Trail set to last until 2028

Prepare for some construction over Yellowhead Trail that will last for quite some time, with the demolition and replacement of the 17 Street bridges set to wrap up in late 2028.
The City of Edmonton says starting tomorrow, Oct. 22, 2026, the 17 Street bridges over Yellowhead Trail will close to all traffic for demolition and replacement. The bridges have reached the end of their service life and will be replaced to improve safety, meet current City standards, and increase load-carrying capacity.
As previously scheduled, work was set to begin in late October 2026, starting with demolition of the structure over Yellowhead Trail eastbound. Foundation and substructure work will follow. In 2027, the eastbound bridge will be constructed. The structure over Yellowhead Trail westbound will be demolished, followed by foundation and substructure work.
The project will be complete in 2028 with the construction of the superstructure of the westbound Yellowhead Trail bridge, the final aspects on both bridges, and the removal of temporary cross-overs. Normal Yellowhead Trail operations will resume at this time.
