A major Banff project is in the works and the design concepts are dazzling

Conceptual designs have been unveiled for a major Banff project, giving a first look at plans for the 200-block of Banff Avenue.
The 200-Block Banff Avenue Redevelopment has been on the table from Parks Canada since the late 1990s, after the federal agency noticed a need to improve reception, orientation, and education services for visitors to the park.
It was determined that the best place to deliver the improvements would be in the heart of Banff, where 80 per cent of visitors stop during their trip. Knowing it would take many years to come to fruition, Parks Canada began acquiring the necessary lands on the 200-block of Banff Avenue.
In June 2025, Parks Canada and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada launched a design competition, after which six respondents provided full conceptual design proposals.
On Jan. 30, 2026, Parks Canada unveiled the six conceptual designs selected and started an engagement period where Canadians have the opportunity to vote and provide feedback on the designs.
The conceptual designs were required to demonstrate four key elements: a reflection of Banff National Park’s unique character, authentic incorporation of Indigenous representation, elements that support the local community, and a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
Here are the six conceptual design submissions:
