The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a police incident that allegedly sent a 12-year-old girl to the hospital.

A release from ASIRT states that the incident in question started on November 16 when police were called to a residence in Lethbridge on reports of a woman screaming and smashing objects in the building’s downstairs unit.

The woman was arrested, and when officers returned to the station they discovered that the woman who had initially called the police had warrants out for her arrest and had used a fake name.

Police returned to the building on reports of that same woman, the initial caller, having stolen an item and damaged the building.

When officers arrived the second time, they found the 33-year-old woman allegedly attempting to damage the building, and who then provided a false name to officers.

The release states that officers then alerted her that they were aware of her actual identity and that she had warrants out for her arrest, at which time the woman attempted to flee into her residence.

In the ensuing struggle to handcuff the woman, ASIRT states that the woman’s 12-year-old daughter “became involved.”

The woman was taken to the police station while the girl was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

ASIRT states that the girl arrived at the police station on November 19 with a lawyer to report the injuries she received during the arrest, and ASIRT was then directed to investigate the situation.

The investigation is currently underway.
