Alberta’s second significant coronavirus curve appears to be on its way down.

While the province had been slowly and steadily (and then not so slowly) been seeing an increase in active coronavirus cases since we hit our lowest at 335 on June 4, the drop in active cases over the long weekend hints at have passed yet another peak.

Alberta’s active cases dropped by 195 over the past three days, plummeting from 1,386 on July 31 to just 1,191 as of Tuesday, August 4, according to new numbers from the Province of Alberta.

Though the trajectory of the little orange line does look promising, it is no cause for celebration just yet — especially seeing as Alberta already saw a false peak back at the start of April, right before coronavirus cases surged to their actual peak by the end of that month.

Still, Alberta has also seen a promising drop in new case numbers as well, with August 1, 2, and 3 marking the first time Alberta saw daily new cases under 75 since July 10.

August 1 also marked the first day of mandatory mask bylaws being enacted in Edmonton, Calgary, and Banff, public health measures that had all been announced in the latter part of July when new cases were on the rise.

The decrease in active cases has not stopped the province’s rising death count, however, as Alberta surpassed 200 coronavirus-related deaths over the long weekend, landing at a total of 201 by Tuesday.

To date, 720,131 tests have been administered to 596,714 Albertans, accounting for just over 1/8th of the province’s total population.

11,146 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Alberta so far, of which 9,754 have since recovered.
