If you’re on the hunt for the new Unknown Soldier toonie in Alberta, a coin exchange is happening in the province soon.
Earlier this year, the Royal Canadian Mint announced that the new $2 coin would begin circulating in early November.
The coin pays homage to the 25th anniversary of the return of the Unknown Soldier to Canada. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands as a symbol for the more than 120,000 Canadians who gave their lives for peace and freedom.

In May 2000, the remains of the Unknown Soldier were brought back to Canada from a First World War military cemetery located near Vimy, France.
The casket of the Unknown Soldier resided in the Hall of Honour in Parliament’s Centre Block for three days, where thousands of Canadians came to pay their respects. On May 28, 2000, the remains of the Unknown Soldier were entombed with full military honours in a granite-and-bronze sarcophagus at Canada’s National War Memorial.
The inner core of the toonie’s reverse depicts a street-level view of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Silhouettes of four sentries representing all Canadians who serve or have served appear behind the tomb.
The coin exchange is taking place at the Silver Gold Bull at Southcentre Mall. The Royal Canadian Mint also states there will be a limit on the number of coins guests can exchange.
Coin exchanges are cash-only transactions, any Canadian circulation coin or banknote denomination is acceptable.
The exchange will take place on Friday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There will also be an opportunity to collect the 2025 $1 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada and the $2 Celebrating the Life and Art of Daphne Odjig coins.
