RCMP in southeastern Alberta say a man was struck and killed early Monday morning after he got out of his vehicle to inspect any damage after hitting an animal.

Mounties say at 4:10 a.m. yesterday, Brooks RCMP responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle on Highway 1, near Range Road 131.

Upon arrival, a damaged vehicle was located with the doors open, and a dead man was found on the side of the road. Initial investigation has determined that the man hit an animal and was checking his vehicle when he was hit by another vehicle. The vehicle which hit him did not remain on the scene.

The man has been identified as a 30-year-old male resident of Andrews, Alta. RCMP sends condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and there is reason to believe the suspect vehicle is a grey or silver Volkswagen, which will have damage to the driver’s side.

RCMP is seeking assistance from the public. If you were in the area and saw anything, or may have dash cam video from midnight to 4:30 a.m. at that location, you are asked to contact Brooks RCMP at 403-794-4400.
