Surrounded by mountain peaks, tons of shops, cafes, and views straight out of a postcard, Banff just made a list of Rocky Mountain spots with the best downtowns in 2026.
World Atlas released a list of seven towns in the Rockies with the best downtown areas in 2026, and Banff was the only Canadian location to make the cut.
“The town’s central area is framed by the majestic Canadian Rockies, providing a 360-degree view of the snow-capped mountains as you walk its streets,” the ranking says.Â
It noted Banff Avenue as a major draw with its seemingly endless stores, ranging from outdoor gear retailers and art galleries to swanky souvenir shops and fancy restaurants.Â

Banff is no stranger to the spotlight, and it was even recently named one of the best places to visit in 2026.
Apart from the sprawling Banff Avenue, World Atlas also touted the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies as “probably the best place in town to learn more about the area’s human and natural history.”
If you’re interested in the history of the region, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies collects and preserves materials related to the cultural history of the Canadian Rockies. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is around $15 for adults.

The ranking also noted Banff’s dining scene, which is full of amazing restaurants like the Grizzly House, which is well known for its fondue and different kinds of exotic meats.
Of course, World Atlas also mentioned the abundance of outdoor activities available, like walking and biking trails that wind through the town, and hot springs that are located just outside the town.
Other destinations on the list included Taos, New Mexico; Telluride, Colorado; and Kalispell, Montana.
