Three Alberta destinations are getting national recognition ahead of the new year.
U.S. News has released its list of the 20 best places to visit in Canada for 2026, and Calgary, Jasper and Banff all earned spots. The annual list is based on a mix of factors, including affordability, entertainment options, diversity of accommodations, user votes and expert opinions.
The news outlet says Canada’s wide range of landscapes and cities can make narrowing down a single vacation spot a challenge.
“From the cosmopolitan streets of Toronto to the snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies, our neighbour to the north features a diverse set of vacation destinations that entice travellers year-round,” the outlet said.
Jasper ranked second overall, praised for its sweeping mountain views and outdoor adventure. “No matter the season, there’s always a reason to visit Jasper,” it said. U.S. News touted everything from Maligne Canyon to Mount Edith Cavell, while wildlife sightings may include caribou, moose and even wolverines.

Banff came in at number five on the list, with U.S. News comparing the mountain town to a Swiss ski village minus the long flight or hefty price tag. Outdoor activities range from skiing and mountain biking to hiking near the Hoodoos, followed by hearty meals like bison burgers or fondue.
“Banff caters to everyone from intrepid explorers who prefer to end the day in an upscale hotel, to tent and RV campers who fill the campgrounds from summer to fall,” U.S. News says.
Calgary ranked 16th on the list. The outlet highlighted the city’s transformation from a mounted police outpost to a modern commercial hub, while noting its Western roots. With its proximity to the Rockies and events like the Calgary Stampede, the city was highlighted for its ability to blend cowboy culture with big-city amenities.
Other Canadian spots to make the list include Quebec City, which ranked first, as well as Niagara Falls, Prince Edward Island, and Montreal.
