Air travellers must provide medical proof when refusing to wear a face mask

Air travellers in Canada who refuse to wear a mask for medical reasons will now be required to provide proof prior to boarding their flights.

An Interim Order from the federal government which outlines a number of requirements around air travel and COVID-19, was updated last week to add the provision.

Masks have been mandatory on flights since April 20, but now travellers are required to show proof if they say they are unable to wear a face mask for a medical reason.

Other exemptions for wearing a face mask on flights include infants and those who are unable to remove their mask without assistance.

Travellers are also required to undergo a health check to ensure they are not exhibiting symptoms of coronavirus, as well as a temperature check.

Individuals who violate any of the coronavirus provisions could be subject to a $5,000 fine.
