Canada is home to plenty of world-class universities, and a new global ranking has just proved that once again.
The National Taiwan University (NTU) recently released its latest ranking of the world’s top universities, with several universities in Canada making the cut. Unlike reports where universities are ranked under various categories such as teaching quality, reputation, and student experience, the NTU ranking takes a different approach.
The latest ranking compares the quality and quantity of scientific papers (including sciences and social sciences) that each university has published and delves into the research performance from both the short and long term (two years and 11 years).
“Although scientific papers are the major part of a university’s academic output, there are several dimensions such as published books, research projects, and owning patents that can also represent a university’s academic performance,” notes the report.
“Generally, the quantity and quality of a university’s scientific papers are widely used for estimating the academic performance of the university, except for the humanities field.”
The number one spot goes to Harvard University, which had a score of 92.7. Three Canadian universities were ranked among the 100 best in the world, which is certainly impressive considering that a total of 1,243 universities were analyzed for the report. One Canadian university also managed to crack the top 10, among renowned universities like Sanford University, the University of Oxford, and Johns Hopkins University.
Here are the top three universities in Canada that are considered among the best in the world, according to NTU’s report:
