Why did the Government of Canada just give The Beaches a shoutout on social?
It’s not every day the Government of Canada gives your band a shoutout, but that’s exactly what happened to Toronto rock band The Beaches after the country’s official X account shared an unexpected post celebrating the all-female group.
The post caught a number of us fans off guard, not because The Beaches aren’t popular (they very much are!) but because it’s not exactly the kind of content you’d expect from the federal government.
The verified account, which has more than 1.1 million followers, regularly spotlights Canadian culture, travel destinations, and major events, but it seldom taps into Canadian pop culture.
On Aug. 4, the verified account posted: “Have you heard of The Beaches? Their Coachella set will change your life,” referencing a quotable line in the show the band was heavily featured in, Off Campus.

Like Heated Rivalry, Off Campus is based on a series of young adult books penned by Canadian author Ella Kennedy. However, it focuses on hetero relationships and takes place in a fictional U.S. town, despite filming entirely in Vancouver, B.C.
As reported in Deadline, the hockey rom-com, which premiered May 13 on Prime Video, logged 36 million viewers worldwide in its first two weeks. It’s the streamer’s third biggest series release of all time, behind The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout.
In the second episode of the series, main protagonist Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) watches The Beaches perform their Coachella set on her laptop with her crush, Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli). Cut to the next day, when Garrett queues up the band’s song “Edge of the Earth” on Spotify.
Who are The Beaches?
The Beaches are a Toronto quartet made up of lead vocalist and bassist Jordan Miller, guitarist Kylie Miller, keyboardist and guitarist Leandra Earl, and drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel. Yes, they really did grow up in the Toronto neighbourhood that inspired the band’s name.
As stated on the band’s official website, The Beaches have won two Juno Awards, released seven Top 5 singles, including the viral hit “Blame Brett,” performed at Coachella in 2025, and opened for two of the biggest rock bands in the world, The Rolling Stones and Foo Fighters.
The alt-indie-rockers have been making music since 2013, but it wasn’t until 2017 that they released their debut album, Late Show. Their second, Blame My Ex, came out in 2023, while their latest, No Hard Feelings, dropped in 2025.
Not that The Beaches were a bunch of unknowns before Off Campus came along. The band had already built a loyal fanbase, but the show’s success helped push them even further into the mainstream, introducing their music to a whole new group of listeners.
In fact, Billboard Canada pointed out that since the show’s release, the band’s 2023 track “Edge of the Earth” became their biggest song on streaming platforms, with a whopping 888 per cent increase in week-over-week growth.
The group’s entire discography continued to surge, experiencing a 48 per cent week-over-week growth on streaming platforms, the magazine added.
Just three days after the show premiered, the band posted an Instagram video, giddy with excitement that they now “exist in the Off Campus universe,” the number one Prime Video show in over 20 countries.

The Beaches, now with over 11.8 million likes on TikTok and 6.9 monthly listeners on Spotify, have also started embracing the show’s popularity during concerts, asking crowds, “Is anyone watching Off Campus?” and even projecting their now-famous clip on the screen behind them.
So, how did The Beaches end up getting a shoutout from the Government of Canada three months after the show premiered? We may never know who exactly is behind the keyboard (my money is on a Gen Zer or, at the very least, an elder millennial with exquisite taste). Still, the account seems just as invested in young adult dramas as the rest of us.
Season two of Off Campus has already started filming. According to fan accounts tracking the cast, production in Vancouver is expected to continue into September, although Prime Video has not yet confirmed a release date.
Who knows what emerging band will be featured on the next soundtrack — and if it gets the Government of Canada’s nod of approval.
