A Canadian man is celebrating a life-changing lottery win after claiming the $36 million Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball prize in mid-October.

Stacey Boyce of Whitecourt, Alberta, was revealed as the winner of the enormous prize on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Boyce was born and raised in Calgary but operates a logging company near Hinton, where he makes regular runs to the store to stock his camp.

“I’m there almost every day to get propane,” Boyce explained. “I usually buy my lottery tickets once a week [while I’m there].”

On one trip into town, Boyce checked his Lotto 6/49 ticket for the Oct. 15 draw.

“I went into 7-Eleven to buy some new propane tanks and scanned it,” he said. “I’d heard [the Lotto 6/49 winner] was someone in Alberta.”

Boyce’s jaw was on the floor when he saw the amount.

“I said, ‘Holy Cow!’” he laughed. “I actually walked out of the store and had to come back because I’d forgotten my propane bottles!”

Once Boyce had his propane bottles and winning ticket in hand, he made his way back to his job site in a daze.

“It’s all kind of a blur to be honest,” he continued. “The first person I told was my cousin. She had a lot of advice for me.”

Boyce said he has since told his daughter, who immediately asked for a pony.

“I want to make sure my daughter has a comfortable life; we’ll see about the pony,” he said, laughing.

Boyce has no plans to stop working and said more than anything, he’s looking forward to putting his winnings into his logging company.

“It’ll definitely speed up the plans I have for my business,” he said. “It’s life-changing — and hopefully for the better.”

“I’d really like to do some good with it,” he said. “It’s a lot to wrap your head around, so I’m talking to people I trust about it.”

Boyce purchased his winning ticket from Valley Mart at 106 Market St. in Hinton, Alberta. He won his prize by matching the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball selection on Wednesday, Oct. 15: 30367074-01.
