We’ve all heard the saying that nothing good happens after midnight, but for one Canadian lottery winner, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Edmonton resident Rhonda Starkell was wide awake at 2:30 a.m. and decided to pass the time by checking her lottery numbers online.

As it turns out, she had won $1 million in the Sept. 2 Lotto 6/49 Guaranteed Prize draw.

“I couldn’t sleep,” she said. “I went onto WCLC’s website and was checking my numbers and then woke up my partner and said, ‘I think I just won the lottery!'”

She tried to go back to sleep but said she was too shocked by the news.

Her partner, meanwhile, had a considerably more relaxed reaction.

“My partner woke up, checked my ticket and said, ‘I think you did win,’ and then went back to bed.”

The win also came on a particularly meaningful day for Starkell, as it was both her late father’s and grandson’s birthdays.

She now has a few plans for the $1 million prize, including paying off her mortgage, buying a new vehicle, and investing some of the money.

She’d also like to travel, with Holland (Netherlands) and Greece among the destinations on her list.

Starkell purchased the winning ticket from Dolar Drug Mart at 13211 132 St. NW in Edmonton. Her winning selection was 34907137-01.
