For one Canadian lottery player, it looks like retirement came much sooner than planned after a surprise Lotto 6/49 win.

Ross Strang Horrocks and Deborah Jane Stanway, a couple from Estrie, Que., play the lottery together. One day, they stopped at a convenience store to purchase a Lotto Max ticket. However, they changed their mind and opted for a Lotto 6/49 ticket instead.

When they checked their ticket, they discovered they had won a free play for the Lotto 6/49 March 19. When the couple claimed their free play, they opted to add the Double Jeu, which allows participants to play the Lotto 6/49 and the Québec 49.

When they checked their ticket after the March 19 draw, they were shocked: they had won the Québec 49 top prize.

Horrocks said, “The lottery counter was frantic!”

That’s because Horrocks and Stanway were now $2 million richer. The couple recalled the excitement as they validated their winning ticket.

“Everyone was wondering what was happening,” stated Horrocks.

While at the Loto-Québec headquarters to claim their giant cheque, they shared their plans for their winnings: they said they’d use them to spoil their loved ones.

As for Stanway, the financial security from the win means she can finally follow in her husband’s footsteps and retire.

The winning ticket was purchased at the IGA Extra at 1531 Rue du Sud in Cowansville. The retailer will receive a 1 per cent commission of $20,000.

Recently, another lottery player from Quebec became a multimillionaire after winning the $5-million Classic Draw prize during the Lotto 6/49 draw on Saturday, April 5.
