For one Canadian man, a surprise lottery win means he can finally retire and achieve his dream of becoming a homeowner.
Yves Samson is a lottery player in his 60s who lives in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Que. Like many Canadians, he always hoped to one day own his own home. For years, Samson has been playing Lotto 6/49, choosing numbers through Quick Picks.
One day, he decided to stop at Dépanneur Voisin to buy a Lotto 6/49 ticket. After the draw, he stopped at a gas station and headed to the convenience store to validate his ticket.
While waiting for the clerk to check his ticket, Samson joked with the customer behind him, stating, “This guy never gives me a win!”
But Samson was quickly proven wrong. To his surprise, he heard a sound from the terminal announcing that he had won and not just any prize — he won $1 million in the June 4 Lotto 6/49 draw.

While at the Loto-Québec headquarters to claim his cheque, he shared his plans now that he’s $1 million richer. Samson said that his windfall has made it possible for him to finally retire. And that’s not all, he can now fulfill his long-time dream of owning a home. He said he plans to use his winnings to buy a modest home for himself.
As for the retailer who sold Samson his winning ticket, they will receive a one per cent commission of $10,000. The lucky ticket was sold at Dépanneur Voisin at 6 Rue des Oblats Nord in Ville-Marie.
The next Lotto 6/49 draw is on Wednesday, July 9, and the Gold Ball prize is worth $18 million.
