For one Canadian, winning the lottery was the easy part — telling his wife, who thinks it’s a waste of money, was the real challenge.

Robert Adams, 65, is a resident of Maberly, Ont., who has been playing the lottery for decades. The retiree said that he enjoys playing Instant games like Monopoly, as well as Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49. One day, he stopped at a store to try his luck by buying a $20 Instant Monopoly ticket.

“After a doctor’s appointment, I went to the store and picked up this ticket,” he recalled while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. “I played it right away while I was still in the store and scanned it at the ticket checker. When I saw the prize amount, I was shocked!”

After years of trying his luck, he finally won big: he had scored the Instant Monopoly top prize and was now $250,000 richer.

Still in disbelief as he stared at the screen, Adams wondered how he was going to break the news to his spouse.

“My first thought was, ‘How am I going to explain this to my wife?'” he said with a chuckle. “She’s of the opinion that buying tickets is a waste of money.”

He waited a few more days before finally deciding to share the news with his wife.

“When she heard the prize amount, she was pretty happy,” he said.

When asked how it feels to win the lottery, Adams said, “Being a winner really changes your perspective on life.”

The winning ticket was purchased at MacEwen on Wilson Street West in Perth.
