A Canadian man is a fresh multi-millionaire after netting a $5,000,000 win after playing the lottery weekly for the past 35 years.

Mike Meldrum of Calgary, Alta., won his $5 million on the June 18 Lotto 6/49 draw.

“I saw someone had won in Calgary, but I hadn’t checked my ticket yet,” he told Lotto Spot while claiming his prize. “[My partner and I] sat and mapped out what we would do if we won before we looked.”

Meldrum said he has been playing Lotto 6/49 weekly for 35 years, and this was something he had dreamed about for a long time.

“When I first told my wife, she didn’t believe me,” he said. “She told me to send her the numbers so she could check online herself.”

Now, that his dream of winning the lottery has become reality, he has a few ideas on what he is going to do with the money.

“Our cars are about ten years old, so we’re thinking maybe new vehicles,” he said. “I have some decisions to make about continuing work, too.”

“We haven’t made any plans yet, but when we travel, we can stay longer while visiting my wife’s family,” he continued. “It doesn’t feel real!”

Meldrum purchased his winning Lotto 6/49 ticket from the 7-Eleven at 15150 Mount McKenzie Dr. SE in Calgary. He won his prize in the June 18 Lotto 6/49 Classic Draw by matching all six numbers in the selection: 8, 14, 20, 25, 30, and 38.

Alberta has been home to a flurry of lottery winners lately, with one young man making a wise decision with his windfall, while another couple who “rarely” played the lottery got lucky thanks to a gas station stop.
