After just their second attempt to play the lottery as a group, one Canadian family is now celebrating a seven-figure win.
Kevin Lurette wanted to try his luck in the lottery by playing in a group that included his parents, Irène Landry Lurette and Irenée Lurette, his wife, Julie Demeule, and her mother, Ada Lauzon.
Although they didn’t win in their first group play, the family, who live in Montérégie and Lanaudière in Quebec, remained undeterred.
“It’s only the second time we buy a family ticket as a group,” recalled Kevin.
After purchasing an Extra ticket at a store in Montérégie, Kevin decided to check the results on the Loto-Québec app, and was shocked: they had won the Extra top prize in the Aug. 8 draw and were now $1 million richer.

Still in disbelief, he immediately called his parents to share the news, stating, “I called my father and told them to sit down!”
With the $1 million split among five members, each of them will receive a windfall of $200,000.
While at the Loto-Québec headquarters to claim their cheque, Kevin and Demeule said they’ll put their winnings towards investments and home renovations. Landry Lurette wants to use her share to spoil her grandchildren, while her husband says he can pay off the car he just purchased.
Despite their big win, the group said they plan to keep playing the lottery together and are hoping for another big win — they’ve just purchased their third ticket.
The winning ticket was purchased at the Pasquier grocery store in Delson, Montérégie. The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $10,000.
