An Ontario retiree chose her lottery numbers wisely, nabbing a big prize.
Midland resident Heather Thompson is celebrating after winning an Ontario 49 second prize worth $50,000 in the March 5, 2025, draw.
The retiree has been playing with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) for decades. Her go-to games include Ontario 49, Lotto 6/49 and Lottario — and she never misses a draw.

This is Thompson’s first big win, and it’s especially sweet for the mother of two and grandmother of two because she prefers to choose her own lottery numbers based on family birthdays and special anniversaries.
She recalled checking her ticket early in the morning.
“It was 5 a.m. when I decided to check the winning numbers on my phone,” Thompson said, during her visit to the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect her windfall. “At first, I thought I’d won $500. Then I saw the bonus number and froze. I was so excited; I couldn’t believe it!”
The family woman broke the amazing news to her siblings, partner and children.
“They were all thrilled for me,” she said with a smile.
When asked how it feels to win the lottery, Thompson said, “It’s just — wow. I’m speechless and still can’t fully process it. It’s all just so exciting.”
She has already put her lottery prize to good use on some home upgrades.
“I ordered new windows for my home right away, and I plan to paint my house. I’m retired, so this win is a nice cushion to fall back on,” she concluded.
Thompson bought her winning ticket at King’s Little General Convenience on King Street in Midland.
