Travelling to Dubai? Canada issues serious advisory for the UAE

If you’re heading from Canada to Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, a new advisory is urging travellers to be cautious.
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, the government of Canada updated its travel advice for the UAE, known for its popular tourist destination Dubai, due to “ongoing tensions in the region and the threat of terrorism.” Currently, Canada’s advisory level for the UAE is yellow, which means travellers are urged to “exercise a high degree of caution.”
“The security situation remains unpredictable and could deteriorate significantly with little or no warning,” reads the update. “This may result in travel disruptions, including flight cancellations and airspace closures.”
The country has enhanced security measures in place as terrorist groups have indicated their intention to target the UAE, in particular, the possibility of attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets. If you’re planning a trip to Dubai or anywhere else in the country, it’s important to be aware that attacks could occur at any time, and possible targets include airports, transportation hubs, restaurants, shopping centres, and popular tourist spots.

“The threat of terrorism and extremism is a daily challenge that targets the security and stability of our region while threatening our political, economic, and social systems,” stated the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Due to the conflicts in the Middle East and the Gulf region, the Canadian government is also warning of possible missile strikes and drones. If you’re already in the region or travelling there, make sure to stay on top of the latest news through local and international media. Canadians in the region are also being asked to stay vigilant and to follow the instructions of local authorities at all times.
Canadians travelling internationally can sign up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA), a free and confidential service that notifies citizens outside the country of an emergency abroad or a personal emergency at home.
There are also travel advisories in place for popular destinations like Thailand and Mexico.
