Lottery win has Canadian retail worker eyeing retirement

For one Canadian lottery player, a massive win means that her dream of retirement can finally become a reality.

Angela Pompei, 71, is a retail worker who lives in the community of Tottenham, Ont. For the past 20 years, Pompei has been trying her luck in the lottery, playing Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Ontario 49, as well as a mix of Instant tickets.

After work one day, Pompei said that she stopped at her usual store to buy a Lotto 6/49 ticket. On Sunday morning, she decided to check her ticket, but was confused by the result.

“At first, I thought I won $1,000,” she recalled with a chuckle.

But it turned out that there were a lot more zeros on the screen — she had won a Lotto 6/49 prize worth $1 million in the Gold Ball draw on Sept. 6, 2025.

“I realized it was $1 million and had to wake up my daughter to tell her,” said Pompei.

The massive windfall means more financial security for the winner, who said she’s looking forward to preparing for the future and that future could include retirement.

While at the OLG Prize Centre to pick up her cheque, she was asked what it’s like to win the lottery.

Pompei smiled and said, “I feel like a million bucks!”

If you’re hoping to try your luck in the lottery, the next Lotto 6/49 draw is set for Wednesday, Oct. 15. The Gold Ball prize is worth $36 million, and there are now 17 balls left in the draw.
