Bagged milk in Canada is once again getting attention, leaving Americans confused by this very Canadian way to buy milk.
The Government of Canada shared a post celebrating National Milk Day on Sunday, Jan. 11, with a photo that’s uniquely Canadian: bagged milk in a pitcher. The U.S. also celebrates National Milk Day on the same day, according to the United States Census Bureau.
“Canadians love milk! Here, it comes in cartons, jugs, and… bags? Yup, in the eastern parts of Canada, most people prefer to buy their milk in soft plastic bags,” reads the post. “It’s cost-effective and environmentally friendly, but can often confuse visitors! How do you buy your milk?”

No country that sells milk in a bag is a serious place

Milk bags are messy and we Americans went away from them for a reason.

And it’s not just Americans who are left baffled by the concept of milk in plastic bags.
Been to Canada twice and I have friends there and still cannot wrap my head around this concept. It just intrigues me 🧐 https://t.co/ZX1TPFHrvi

Several Canadians were quick to defend milk in bags.
I think I might just have too much Canadian blood to understand what’s so confusing about the whole “milk in a bag” thing.

I will always defend bagged milk. You just throw two in the freezer and pull it out when the current milk bag is less than 25% full to thaw. https://t.co/8OJwK9uMC0

I rarely buy milk in jugs. Doesn’t take up as much room and u can freeze it right in the bag.

Convenient, recyclable, and positively Canadian. 😊 https://t.co/9cUgH1xl4F

Anything but in begs. Milk is way better sealed when storing in the fridge.

Despite Americans’ mixed reactions, they’re actually to thank for making bagged milk possible in Canada.
“The American chemical company DuPont introduced milk bags made of thin polyethylene plastic in Canada in 1967,” reads a 2021 article published on Dalhousie University’s website. “The innovation took off in the 1970s, when Canada converted to the metric system, because their volume could be modified more easily than cartons or jugs.”
