American visiting Canada impressed by 'really affordable' Dollarama prices

An American visiting Canada shared their shock and awe at the offerings of Canadian discount retailer Dollarama.

Beks, who goes by the username @instabeks on Instagram, posted a Reel about their first experience at the dollar store.

“This is not an ad, but I was really impressed by the selection and prices at Dollarama! I got a bunch of stuff for less than $20 (CAD),” reads the caption. “Good for you, Canada, you get another win with this fine retail establishment.”

Beks starts off the Reel walking among the stocked aisles of the store, saying that it’s not like Dollar General, which is a discount retailer in the United States.

“Everything is more like, I think most of it’s more than $1, but it’s all like, really affordable. I don’t understand what this place is,” they say in bewilderment.

They then list all of the surprising items you can buy at Dollarama — everything from bird houses to pet supplies to rubber duckies.

They’re super impressed by the candy and crafting aisle, the “massive” toiletry section and the “insane” tupperware aisle.

“Everything is really affordable, actually. You could get Tampax pearls, like a box of those for $3.50,” they say. “This bag of popcorn is like, also $3.50. Everything’s like name brand, even though I don’t recognize some of the names of the brands because they’re Canadian.”

They end the Reel showing a shelf of bicycle seats saying, “This store is cool… what is shopping in Canada?”

The Quebec-based retail chain has been around since 1992. Since 2009, Dollarama has been Canada’s largest retailer of items for five dollars or less.

With the soaring cost of living, Dollarama continues to be the go-to spot to save on everyday essentials in Canada.

In 2024, Canadians shared what’s truly worth buying at the dollar store, from home goods to hobbies.

Last month, a Reddit post asking people what the most unexpected item they found at Dollarama drew hundreds of replies. From your favourite pop star’s coffee book to a popular gaming console from the 2010s, check out what shoppers found.
