Calgary's hot chocolate festival offers 140+ drinks - here are the sips we have to try

The sweetest time of year is fast approaching! That’s right, YYC Hot Chocolate Fest is making its grand return to Calgary this weekend.
The annual festival, one of the highlights of winter, will begin on February 1 and run throughout the entire month.
As part of the festivities, Calgarians can try out unique cocoa creations from some of the city’s hottest restaurants and cafes. This year, over 140 spots are participating, all in the hopes of being crowned as Calgary’s best hot chocolate.
Hot chocolate enthusiasts can vote for their favourite hot chocolates in three categories: best hot chocolate, best spirited hot chocolate (for boozy offerings), and the most creative hot chocolate.
The most sold hot chocolate throughout the festival will also get an award.
In addition to offering some truly delicious offerings, the event will raise money for Calgary Meals on Wheels. Up to $3 from each cup sold will go directly to the charity. Last year, the festival raised over $100,000.
Drinks we want to try
Saskatoon Berry Cocoa â Little Chief
Little Chief’s creation celebrates the rich flavour of Saskatoon berries. The sweet sip features Saskatoon berry with maple syrup and is topped with whipped cream, berry powder-coated marshmallows and crumbled hazelnut wafers.
Saturday Morning Cartoons â 8 Cakes
8 Cakes is offering a taste of nostalgia with its hot chocolate offering. This cold raspberry white chocolate is filled with “cereal” red velvet cookies before being topped with a cereal whip and raspberry and chocolate drizzle.
Spiced ChocoKarak â Pappa Roti CafĂ© & Bakery
Why choose between tea and hot chocolate when you can have both? Pappa Roti is taking inspiration from Karak. The drink infuses black tea with cardamom and ginger before it’s combined with milk, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
Chucho y Chata â Native Tongues
This year, Native Tongues is sharing a Horchata-based hot chocolate with the perfect blend of sweetness and spice. The Horchata is combined with cacao oscuro, Canela, and a hint of chile ancho. The drink is then topped with toasted coconut whipped cream, a dusting of cinnamon and three mini churro donas to dunk.
Raspberry Fields Forever – Amato Gelato
Amato Gelato was inspired by an Italian cafe in Paris which invented the Religieuse dessert 200 years ago. The Dutch cocoa is infused with raspberry extract for a fruity twist. The hot chocolate is topped with an authentic Italian pizzelle cookie and two mini stacked choux pastries filled with chocolate mousse imported from Paris.
Me Want Cookie – Bullet Coffee House
Cookie fiends will want to check out Bullet Coffee House’s offering. Paying homage to a Sesame Street favourite, the steeped chocolate drink is blended with chocolate chip cookie dough flavour before being topped with blue whipped cream, edible eyes and, of course, plenty of cookies.
