Wildfire smoke is making northern Alberta look apocalyptic (PHOTOS)

Northern Alberta has been engulfed by a smokey haze thanks to the out-of-control wildfires raging throughout the province.

The Chuckegg Creek Wildfire has grown to 130,000 hectares, threatening the town of High Level and Mackenzie County.

As the fire has been burning for over a week now, the smoke and ash particles have had time to travel throughout the province, and even the country, causing a smokey haze as far away as Vancouver, BC.

The haze is heaviest closer to the blaze, however, and large parts of Alberta have fallen under special air quality statements, including Fort Chipewyan, High Level, Rainbow Lake, Fort Vermillion Mckenzie Highway, Peace River, Fairview, High Prairie, Manning, Wabasca, Peerless Lake, Gift Lake, and Cadotte Lake.

“Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk” reads a statement from Environment Canada.

Residents are reminded to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada for the latest updates and advisories.

According to the Alberta Health Services website, the biggest health risk comes from small particles in the air.

Alberta Health Services recommends:

  • People stay inside as much as possible and bring pets inside
  • Stay hydrated
  • Keep all windows and doors closed.
  • Reducing exposure to wildfire smoke for older adults, those who are pregnant, smokers, and those with heart or lung conditions
  • Close fresh air intakes from furnaces, fireplaces, or stoves
