A new WestJet route from Calgary just saw flight cuts before even launching

A new WestJet flight that is set to connect Calgary and South America this fall has already seen cuts before even taking off.
Back in January, WestJet announced its 100th destination from YYC Calgary Airport, with service to SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil, scheduled to take off three times a week starting on Nov. 8, 2026.Â
However, the airline has since confirmed a reduction in the planned service.
“We can confirm that WestJet has reduced seasonal service between YYC Calgary International Airport and Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport in São Paulo,” a spokesperson for Sunwing and WestJet told Daily Hive.

The adjustments are a result of broader pressures WestJet is facing. “The schedule adjustment is a result of compounding factors impacting the aviation industry right now, including fuel costs and softening demand.”

“Our first flight between Western Canada and South America is the beginning of an exciting chapter in WestJet’s Calgary story. From our very first flight in 1996 to 100 non-stop destinations on four continents, this city has stood alongside us every step of the way,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, chief executive officer of the WestJet Group, when the flight was first announced.
The airline has yet to release how the flights have been cut, but it says that all impacted guests have been notified about the change.Â
“We remain dedicated to offering service to South America through our interline and codeshare partners currently serving Brazil,” the airline added.
