A tornado warning was just issued for the City of Calgary

3:05 pm MST update: The warning now states that “several eyewitnesses have reported a possible tornado in west Calgary near the Transcanada Highway at 2:30 pm, heading east at 15 km/h.”

The tornado warnings for all Alberta regions except Calgary have ended, though thunderstorm watches remain in effect for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds Sundre, Calgary, Drumheller, Three Hills, Hanna, Coronation, Oyen, Lloydminster, Wainwright, Vermilion, Provost, Red Deer, Ponoka, Innisfail, and Stettler.

Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for the City of Calgary and surrounding municipalities.

The warning was issued at 2:36 pm, with many Calgarians receiving an emergency alert on their phones advising to “take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.”

Environment Canada’s official alert reads:

“At 2:36 p.m. MDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

An eyewitness reported a possible tornado near Springbank at 2:30 PM, and is heading east at 15 km/h.

This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately.”

The tornado warning is also in effect for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre, Okotoks, High River, and Claresholm.
