Three people are dead following a single-vehicle accident in southern Alberta.

Just before 6:30 pm on Wednesday, Coaldale police and fire crews were called to a strip of Highway 845 just south of Highway 4.

According to a release from Coaldale RCMP, the investigation found that a Ford Freestar minivan had driven off the highway as it headed northbound on Highway 845, as the road curved just before Canadian Pacific rail tracks.

“The minivan entered a deep ditch striking with significant impact on the north bank and coming to a rest on the rail tracks. The speed zone transitioned just south of the collision area from 100 km per hour to 65 km per hour,” the release states.

The three occupants of the vehicle, two elderly women and one elderly man, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe that all three were from the Raymond, Alberta area, though will not be releasing the names of the deceased.
