"Beyond heartbroken": Popular Calgary food stall closed after six years

One of Calgary’s most popular food stalls, known for its standout burgers and beef tacos, has been forced to suddenly close its doors after six years.

The J Spot took to social media to announce its departure from Fresh & Local Market & Kitchens in Avenida Village. Since its conception, The J Spot has become a staple in the city’s southeast for its globally inspired menu of tacos and burgers.

“We are beyond heartbroken and devastated to share that The J Spot will no longer be at its location in Avenida, where we’ve proudly been for the past 6 years,” the spot shared in an Instagram post.

The team behind the spot clarified that the decision to close The J Spot had not been their choice, adding that they had made every attempt to stay put. Despite their efforts, The J Spot’s final day was on Sunday, Aug. 31.

“That decision was taken out of our hands. Without us even knowing, this past Sunday was our last day at our home in Avenida,” they added.

However, despite the sudden closure, The J Spot team added that they don’t plan on being down for long, teasing that they are discussing ways to bring the concept back to Calgary in the future.

Owners Joel and Chera Harris also run Aloha Modern Kitchen, a Hawaiian-inspired eatery on Macleod Trail. In the absence of The J Spot, the couple called on Calgarians for their support of the concept, which opened its doors earlier this year.

“Whether you pop in for a visit, spread the word, or simply share some encouragement — it means the world to us while we navigate this huge, sudden loss,” they added.

While we’re sad to see The J Spot closed for now, plenty of fan-favourite dishes will be available at Aloha in the meantime.
