Landmark Cinemas’ Shawnesy location is getting a serious upgrade.

Renovations are currently underway to convert nine of the theatre’s 10 auditoriums with fully-powered luxury recliners, allowing for additional personal space and a comfier movie-viewing experience.

The only reason that tenth theatre isn’t included in the recliner renos is that it already features upgraded seating for its pre-existing EXTRA Experience — though that’s not to say it isn’t getting anything new during the renovations.

The tenth theatre will see the installment of Canada’s first-ever Laser Ultra presentation, which includes Barco’s state-of-the-art laser projection system alongside DOLBY Atmos sound.

“We are thrilled to be installing recliner seating in our Shawnessy location. Recliner seating, coupled with Canada’s first Laser Ultra presentation experience, are customer focused innovations designed to improve the overall movie-going experience,” said Bill Walker, CEO of Landmark Cinemas Canada, in the release.

“Movie-goers will now have the choice between spacious recliner seats for date nights, a day out at the movies with the entire family, or to enjoy the latest Superhero film in the state-of-the-art Laser Ultra experience.”

The laser system features heightened brightness levels, a better contrast ratio, more vivid colours, and improved 3D over the projection systems of regular movie theatres, according to the release.

The theatre will remain open while renovations commence, with the first three freshly recliner-ed theatres opening on the week of March 4.

All upgraded auditoriums will be open by the end of May.

Due to the increased size of seats, all theatres will take a hit to their overall capacity — though the theatre offers reserved seating free-of-charge, so just make sure to grab your tickets a little ahead of the showing to save your (luxury power-reclining) seat.
