Man charged with sexual assault following Weaselhead Flats attack

The Calgary Police Service has arrested and charged a man following an alleged sexual assault in Calgary’s Weaselhead Flats park.

According to an earlier CPS release, a woman had been walking along the Jack Rabbit Trail on Friday, May 18, when a man rode past her on a mountain bike. Around 15 minutes later the man returned, got off his bike, approached the woman, and asked her about the nearby trails.

The release states that the man then allegedly grabbed the woman from behind, dragged her into nearby bushed, undid his pants, and began sexually touching the woman. The woman escaped from his grip and attempted to use her dog spray, which, upon seeing, made the suspect flee from the scene.

A June 8 update from CPS confirms that a Steven Markin, a 31-year-old from Calgary, has been charged with one count of sexual assault in relation to the Weaselhead Flats park incident.

The release states that the composite sketch released by police in late May encouraged tips from the public, which ultimately led to Markin’s arrest.
