One woman is dead following a fatal stabbing early Friday morning.

A release from the Calgary Police Service states that officers responded to a call in the Marda Loop-Bankview area of Calgary on reports of a woman being stabbed.

The woman was found dead at the scene when emergency crews arrived to the 1800 block of 27th Avenue SW just before 3 am.

Police do not believe the stabbing to have been random in nature, and though an initial attempt to locate a suspect within the area was unsuccessful, the release states that a suspect was identified following investigation and patrols.

That suspect was arrested in downtown Calgary at around 5 am Friday morning.
