NHL follow tracker is exposing player behaviour on Instagram

NHL players may need to be more cautious than ever before regarding their activity on Instagram.

If you haven’t seen it yet, an account by the name of “NHL Follow Tracker” has been making waves on X in recent months. The account, which boasts of “tracking 700+ NHL players’ Instagrams 24/7,” tracks active player follows and unfollows from their personal Instagram accounts.

Fans were interested to hear that former Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri started following Megan Fox, for instance.

Generally, these discoveries are completely harmless, though they do create some great banter for fans. Take, for example, the moment when Canadian-born defenceman Olen Zellweger unfollowed Auston Matthews, Clayton Keller, and Jack Eichel just one day after the U.S. men’s hockey team won Olympic gold.

“Olen Zellweger, I was not aware of your patriotism. Imma have to follow you now,” one user wrote.

Another funny moment from this new account came back in December, when New Jersey Devils defenceman Luke Hughes followed the Minnesota Wild on Instagram shortly after his brother, Quinn, had been traded there. While that in itself got some talking, what made it even better was that he also followed Tate McRae, who his other brother, Jack, was rumoured to be dating.

“Bro is catching up with family business,” a fan quickly replied.

This account doesn’t just track players. It also monitors NHL teams’ Instagram pages. For example, it revealed that the Colorado Avalanche followed Kadri shortly after acquiring him in a trade from the Flames.

One of the funniest updates from this account came less than a month ago. Pittsburgh Penguins star forward Evgeni Malkin began following an account named “Humans Choose Kindness,” only to unfollow it just days later. Fans online had plenty of fun with the situation.

While this account has and will continue to make NHL players more aware of their Instagram activity, it has also created plenty of fun for fans, who can expect more hilarious reveals from it moving forward.
