4 must-listen Calgary Flames shows to replace all-sports radio

The coverage of the Calgary Flames will look much different this coming season than it has in years past.

For a large portion of the fan base, Sportsnet 960 was a go-to source for keeping up with the team. Fans could tune in throughout the day for the latest Flames news, listen to the radio broadcast during games, and stick around afterward for the post-game show.

That all changed when Sportsnet 960 shut down in July.

While the coverage landscape will look different, there will still be plenty of ways for fans to stay up to date with the team.

Here’s a look at some of the different outlets available.

Flames Now

The shutdown of Sportsnet 960 was devastating for many Flames fans, as it left several of the station’s popular on-air personalities without jobs. Thankfully, many of those familiar voices are already finding new homes.

The Flames announced a five-year deal with QR 770 in August, making the station the new home of the team’s radio broadcasts. It was later confirmed that Derek Wills and Meaghan Mikkelson will continue as the play-by-play and colour voices, respectively.

The new deal also includes a daily show called Flames Now, hosted by Pat Steinberg and Jock Wilson. The show will run from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and will also be available across major podcasting platforms.

The Raw Mike Richards Show

Another voice who became a popular fixture among Calgary sports fans is Mike Richards, who spent many years at Sportsnet 960.

Although Richards hadn’t hosted a daily show on the station for some time, he continued to appear weekly with his independently produced The Mike Richards Raw Show.

That show is continuing following the station’s closure, with Richards now filling a weekly spot on QR 770. Two episodes have already been recorded, featuring guests including Craig Conroy and Kelly Hrudey.

Barn Burner

Another Flames podcast with a large following is Barn Burner, hosted by three former Sportsnet 960 employees: Dean “Boomer” Molberg, Ryan Pinder, and former Flames defenceman Rhett Warrener.

The trio host the show every weekday throughout the regular season, offering their thoughts on the Flames, the latest news around the NHL, and plenty of other topics worth tuning in for.

Locked On Flames

For those looking to hear some familiar voices from the Sportsnet 960 era, the Locked On Flames podcast is another option.

Peter Klein co-hosts the show alongside John Easthope, with the duo releasing new episodes daily.

While the loss of Sportsnet 960 marked the end of an era for Flames fans, there’s no shortage of options for those looking to keep up with the team.

Whether it’s radio, podcasts, or daily online coverage, fans will still have plenty of ways to follow the Flames throughout the 2026-27 season and beyond.
