Calgary sports radio favourite Mike Richards announces his return
Rejoice, Calgary Flames fans: Sports radio in this city isn’t going anywhere.
Fans of the Flames — and Calgary sports fans in general — were extremely disappointed to learn in early July that Sportsnet 960, the city’s only all-sports radio program, had been pulled off the airwaves. Questions quickly arose as to what sports content in Calgary would look like moving forward, as well as what would happen with Flames radio broadcasts.
We now have some answers, as the Flames announced a five-year partnership with Corus Entertainment on Wednesday morning. This means that all Flames games will be broadcast on QR 770, along with a daily Flames show. And, as it turns out, there is even more to come.
On Tuesday, Mike Richards joined The Rod Pedersen Show to announce some very exciting news for Calgarians. Richards is well known across the city for his former show Mike Richards in the Morning, which was a massive hit at Sportsnet 960. He returned on 960’s airwaves over a year ago for a weekly show, which aired on Sundays right up until the station was shut down.
“Let me just tell my audience and those in Calgary that I will be back, Sept. 5, right for Labour Day, that I will be back bigger and better than before with a whole bunch of other stuff that I haven’t had in years,” Richards said.
It’s unclear as to exactly where Richards has landed, though it doesn’t appear to be in connection with the Flames and Corus Entertainment. Richards did, however, say that a further update will be coming in the very near future.
“That is coming, and when it does, I’ll jump on. I don’t care if it’s in a couple of days or whenever it is, but when I get what I need to say, I’ll message you, I’ll come back on, and I’ll fill you in on what’s going on,” Richards explained to Pedersen.
So, there you have it. Just over one month after Sportsnet 960 was abruptly shut down, it appears as though there could be multiple sports radio options in Calgary moving forward.
