Macleans magazine just released its latest “Rich List” featuring Canada’s 40 wealthiest people, and Murray Edwards secured the 36th spot on the list, with a net worth of around $5.4 billion.
The magazine gets its numbers from information in the public domain and insider information from things like trading reports and SEC filings.
Edwards is listed under the magazine’s “natural resources” category.
In late 2024, he led Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) through a deal to acquire Chevron Canada’s Alberta oil assets. The deal was around US$6.5 billion, and helped solidify CNRL as one of the world’s leading oil and gas producers, including acquiring 70 per cent of the Duvernay shale formation, which produces around 40,000 barrels of oil and gas per day, and upping CNRL’s share in the Athabasca oil sands project to 90 per cent.

Edwards also has significant holdings in other natural resource companies, such as Imperial Metals, Ensign Energy, and Magellan Aerospace.
Aside from all of his work in natural resources, he also co-owns Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), which includes the Calgary Flames. Edwards has co-owned the Flames since 1994 and is currently the chairman of CSEC.
Earlier this year, Edwards made an appearance on Forbes’ ranking of billionaires.
He dropped one spot from last year, when he held the 35th spot on the list. While his ranking is down, his net worth increased from $4.6 billion last year to $5.4 billion this year.
Changpeng Zhao took the top spot on the list this year, with his work in cryptocurrency bringing his net worth to a casual $91.3 billion. The Thompson Family and Galen Weston Jr. took the second and third spots with net worths of $90.2 billion and $20.6 billion, respectively.
