50,104 brand new Albertans were brought into the world throughout 2018, and each one of them needed a name.
The Government of Alberta has announced the most popular baby names of the past year, and while many monickers that were popular in 2017 remained at the top of the list, there were a few new ones added to the Top 10s.

“Congratulations to all the new parents, and welcome to all of our new Albertans,” said Alberta Premier Rachel Notley.
“As these children grow up, they will shape our future. We are going to help make sure they get a great start, with thousands of affordable child care spaces across Alberta, stronger child and family benefits, and hundreds of new and modernized schools.”

But, before we get to the most popular names, let’s take a look at a few of the more unique choices that parents went with this past year.
According to the Government of Alberta release, Service Alberta saw 13,363 different baby names throughout 2018. They also noticed a trend towards pop-culture-inspired designations, with Marvel’s Loki, Thanos, and Captain being marked down in their records, alongside Star Wars’ Kylo, Leia, and Anakin.
Service Alberta also saw some monickers related to books from the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus), places (Ireland, Chicago, Venice), outer space (Galaxy, Jupiter, Moon), gemstones (Amethyst, Sapphire, Onyx, Diamond) and even cannabis (Indica) in 2018.
The top girl name in Alberta in 2018 was Olivia, which has held the #1 title for the past three years in a row, and saw 235 new Olivias born in 2018.
Liam took the top spot for boys, with 225 new Liams joining the province last year.
