Here's how to get a lawn sign for the 2019 provincial election

Apr 3 2019, 2:53 am

It may be spring in Alberta, but lawns all around the province are sprouting political signs rather than flowers.

With just two weeks to go until the 2019 Alberta provincial election (and one week until advance voting polls open) prospective MLAs are pounding the pavement in their respective regions, knocking on doors, and leaving lawn signs in their wake.

If you haven’t yet been visited by your candidate of choice, no worries! You can still support the political party of your choosing by grabbing a sign and setting it up yourself.

Here’s how to go about getting one from the main political parties this campaign season:

Alberta’s NDP

Grabbing a sign from the NDP is pretty simple, as you can request one from their official website by punching in your name, address, email, and phone number. You are also given the option to request balcony ties if you happen to live in an apartment or to alert the NDP team that you have a sprinkler system if it would be better for them just to leave the sign on your porch, please and thank you.

They do ask for a $7 contribution to cover the cost of the sign, though you have the option to politely decline.

United Conservative Party

Much the same as the NDP, the UCP has the option to request a sign right on their website, and require your name, address, email, and phone number before bringing their blue to your front door.

Interestingly enough, they also offer large lawn signs as well, which are apparently free of charge.

Alberta Party

The Alberta Party is also eager to get some large signs out into the public, with the option to request a big sign if you are on a major path.

Once you’ve punched in all your personal information, the team should bring you a sign corresponding to your particular riding sometime before April 16.

Alberta Liberal Party

Unfortunately for backers of the Alberta Liberal Party, there does not appear to be an option to request a sign from their website.

We’re sure that a quick phone call to their team at (780) 414-1124 or an email to [email protected] should do the trick, however.

Don’t expect to see Alberta Liberal Party signs as widespread throughout the province, either, as they are only fielding 51 candidates during this election. For comparison, the NDP, UCP, and Alberta Party have all nominate the maximum amount of 87.

Election sign rules

According to the Government of Alberta, you don’t actually need a permit to put up election signs along provincial highways, though there are a few guidelines that need to be followed, namely:

  • The maximum sign size permitted in a highway right-of-way (the existing highway limits) is 1.5 m2
  • Election signs are temporary and are only permitted from the date the election is called until three days after the election
  • Signs must meet eligibility criteria (see ineligible election sign types below)

The website also states that signs cannot display flashing or moving lights, be floodlights, have any moving parts, use or imitate the wording of common traffic signs (like “stop” or “yield”), or resemble the shape of a regular traffic sign.

Though if you’re just planning to put a little plastic sign on your lawn, we think you should be fine!
